2024雅思作文范文篇1

what are the causes for losing varieties in languages and cultures?

every human society has a culture that includes arts, customs, language, etc. every culture changes and the main causes for losing varieties in language and culture, in my opinion, are: contact with other cultures, and development of science and technology.

when two cultures have continuous contact with each other, the two cultures may blend or adopt their cultural traits, such as language, clothing, etc. thus losing their individual cultural varieties. when people of one culture who move to a country where another culture dominates may give up their old ways and become part of the dominant culture. for example, groups of people from many countries have settled in the united states. most of these people gradually abandoned the way of life of their homeland, and adopted an american way of life. they learned the language, adopted the customs, and followed the traditions.

the development of science and technology, on the other hand, may attribute to changes in a culture. the invention of steam engine, for example, produced great changes in the way people lived. the invention of the computer in the mid 20th century has also had enormous impact. it has brought far-reaching changes in communication, education, entertainment, and numerous other areas of modern life.

in conclusion, to lose varieties in language and culture is to lose richness in them. therefore, to my mind, multiculturalism should prevail in the contemporary world, so that ethnic groups can bring variety and richness to a society by introducing their own ideas and customs.

wild animals have no place in the 21st century. some people think that preventing these wild animals from dying out is a waste of resource. to what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion.

biological diversity has never been so threatened as it is today as a result of the process of human civilization. the various forms of pressure created by human activity have destroyed natural balance, led to the deterioration of natural habitats, genetic erosion and the rarity, even disappearance, of a number of plant and animal species.

as the pace of civilization accelerates, more people, taking more space, needing to use more natural resources, engaging in ever-growing consumption, impose severe deterioration on the habitat of animals. an increasing number of people come to realize that the disappearance of animals will result in serious threat to the equilibrium of ecosystem. simply put, the extinction of hawks, a rat-eating bird seen in many regions, will result in the rapid propagation of rats. and rats, further, will destroy the prairies and threaten the other animals like gazelles, zebras and others, who live on grass and green lands. the coexistence of animals and human beings creates perfect harmony and brings about the vividness to our planet.

it is hard to imagine what our world would be like without animals. sociologists also point out that the disappearance of animals can cause social and economic problems. animal trade, as a supporting sector to the world economy, was very active before. however, the situation is beyond control since animal trade is very profitable and alluring. many species cannot escape the adversity of being killed.

certainly, our diet cannot be without meat. there are living stocks, which can provide us with sufficient and nutritious produce. therefore, we need not to resort to wild animals, especially the endangered ones. to protect animals is to protect our living environment. every individual should join efforts to keep the diversity of animals.

with the development of cities, more and more new buildings are appearing in the city. some people claim that the government should ensure all the new buildings should be built in traditional styles. for me, i do not agree with this suggestion.

undoubtedly, the old buildings can reflect our traditional culture and should be protected and built. they are the houses where the ancient people lived. by appreciating these old buildings, we can have a better understanding of our ancient culture and history.

however, i do not agree that all the new buildings should be built in traditional styles. first of all, a city’s culture identity consists of the past culture and the modern culture. while past culture can be represented by the traditional buildings, modern culture should be reflected by modern buildings. if all the new buildings are built in traditional styles, the modern culture may be lost in the city. secondly, the style of the new building should be decided by a lot of factors such as location, function, and so on. for instance, it is impossible for us to build a modern shopping mall into traditional style, because there are a lot of famous brands inside. thirdly, modern buildings can accommodate more people than traditional buildings, which can meet the increasing population.

therefore, i agree that we should build some old buildings, but we should not build all the buildings into traditional styles. we should consider a lot of aspects before we make the final decision.

you should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

some people believe that the spread of tv has made families less closer. to what degree do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

you should write at least 250 words. you should use your own ideas of knowledge and experience and support your arguments with examples and relevant evidence.

as one of the most important inventions of the past century, tv is playing a more and more important role in modern life. however, some people are starting to worry about its negative effects on traditional families. i am convinced that the existence of tv has brought about alienation among family members.

first, watching tv occupies our time to municate with our families. tv provides a ready means of relaxation for people who spend their days doing routine and busy jobs. as soon as tv enters into our home, most of our free time is controlled by it. what is more, the one-eyed monster requires absolute silence and attention. if any member dares to open his mouth, the others order him to shut up immediately. therefore we municate less with our family members.

furthermore, families often quarrel over what programs they should watch. thanks to hardworking tv workers, we enjoy more tv channels and more colorful tv programs. but a question has arisen: it is difficult for families to choose a mon channel because they have different interests. it is inevitable to given rise to quarrel among them.

in addition, poor-quality tv programs can have severe effects on people’s mood and behavior. for instance, a person who watches too many idealized programs may bee unrealistic. in addition, unhealthy programs which contain obscene and violent contents may cause people’s curiosity.

in conclusion, i think that tv indeed has led to alienation among family members. we should be aware about the problem. something should be done as soon as possible to protect the families from the negative effects of television. for example, we should reduce the time spent in front of the little screen and spend more time with our families together. schools are places where students acquire knowledge and skills needed for further achievements. given the pressure that students are facing, some cannot help wondering whether art classes should still be compulsory.

those holding the view that art classes should not be compulsory might think that art consumes too much of students' time. fierce competitions students will face when applying for universities necessitate total devotion to academic subjects. college students who intend to take science as their major are even expected to be fluent in foreign languages now so that essays written by foreign scholars are not barriers in their academic pursuit. in other words, high school students are supposed to show higher levels of academic competence, which seemingly makes art unessential.

however, art classes are by no means only intended for entertainment. children even dabbling in art tend to be more creative in mind. those skilled in music or painting can interpret the world in a way that we cannot expect from a layman. this kind of ingenuity is also a rare quality constantly found in great scientists, whose contributions have served to create a totally new field for the latter generations. in his reply to a question about death, albert einstein considered his departure from the mortal world to be forever farewell to another great musician. with a sigh he answered "i cannot listen to mozart anymore". thus, can we simply regard art classes to be selective?

in conclusion, although stricter academic requirements are imposed on students, this cannot be an excuse for excluding art subjects from their curricula. whatever kind of art can stimulate and inspire students, paving way for their future academic attainment.

one of the most important social developments that helped to make possible a shift in thinking about the role of public education was the effect of the baby boom of the 1950’s and 1960’s on the schools. in the 1920’s, but especially in the depression conditions of the 1930’s, the united states experienced a declining birth rate --- every thousand women aged fifteen to forty-four gave birth to about 118 live children in 1920, 89.2 in 1930, 75.8 in 1936, and 80 in 1940. with the growing prosperity brought on by the second world war and the economic boom that followed it young people married and established households earlier and began to raise larger families than had their predecessors during the depression. birth rates rose to 102 per thousand in 1946,106.2 in 1950, and 118 in 1955.

although economics was probably the most important determinant, it is not the only explanation for the baby boom. the increased value placed on the idea of the family also helps to explain this rise in birth rates. the baby boomers began streaming into the first grade by the mid 1940’s and became a flood by 1950. the public school system suddenly found itself overtaxed. while the number of schoolchildren rose because of wartime and postwar conditions, these same conditions made the schools even less prepared to cope with thefood. the wartime economy meant that few new schools were built between 1940 and 1945. moreover, during the war and in the boom times that followed, large numbers of teachers left their profession for better- paying jobs elsewhere in the economy.

therefore in the 1950’s and 1960’s, the baby boom hit an antiquated and inadequate school system. consequently, the “ custodial rhetoric” of the 1930’s and early 1940’s no longer made sense that is, keeping youths aged sixteen and older out of the labor market by keeping them in school could no longer be a high priority for an institution unable to find space and staff to teach younger children aged five to sixteen. with the baby boom, the focus of educators and of laymen interested in education inevitably turned toward the lower grades and back to basic academic skills and discipline. the system no longer had much interest in offering nontraditional, new, and extra services to older youths.
